Draw Near: The Worth of Once and For All

Hebrews has been building to one invitation: draw near. In chapters 8 through 10 the writer shows why we can. A better covenant enacted on better promises. A better sanctuary not made with hands. A better sacrifice offered once for all, that does what the blood of bulls and goats never could.

The old system could only gesture at forgiveness; Christ secured it. And because the veil is torn and the way is open, the summons is no longer keep your distance but come.

This series walks that argument slowly, from the heavenly sanctuary to the torn veil, so that a people learn the worth of once and for all and take God at His word: draw near.

Draw Near opens August 2 with Deacon Chris Simon's "The Spiritual Tradeoff" from Psalm 24. The teaching moves into Hebrews 8 on August 9.

Sunday Teaching

Before Hebrews 8 opens, Psalm 24 asks the oldest question in worship: who may ascend the hill of the LORD and stand in His holy place? The answer names clean hands, a pure heart, a soul not lifted to falsehood, and a mouth that does not swear deceitfully. Then verse 5 names the source: righteousness from the God of his salvation, received and not achieved.

The spiritual tradeoff is the exchange every worshiper makes. Drawing near means valuing where God is more than where I am and refusing to lift my soul to what is empty. We lose what we were never going to keep and find what we could never lose.

Wednesday Depth-Dive

Stay in Psalm 24 and go deeper into verse 4: "nor sworn deceitfully." Study what a false and empty word looks like in a life through Leviticus 19:12 and Matthew 5:37. The soul lifted to vanity and the mouth that swears deceitfully belong together: what a person treasures will eventually shape what that person says.

What have I been lifting my soul to? Name the trade honestly. What has received your hope, attention, and loyalty this season, and what is that exchange costing you?

Practice

Before asking God for anything, sit still long enough to answer: what have I been lifting my soul to? Name it aloud, receive Psalm 24:5 as the answer to your honesty, and then draw near.

Deeper Reading

Psalm 24:1-6 Read the entrance question, all four requirements, and the righteousness received from the God of salvation without separating verse 5 from verse 4.
Matthew 16:24-26 Listen for the language of exchange. Every person is trading; the question is what the soul is being traded for.
James 4:8; Hebrews 7:25 Hold together the command to draw near and the Priest who is able to save forever those who draw near through Him.

Reflection Questions

Which parts of Psalm 24:4 concern actions, motives, treasure, and speech?
How does Psalm 24:5 change the way the requirements in verse 4 land?
Where has your word to God or another person been given lightly, and what would a truthful mouth look like this week?

Sunday Teaching

The writer announces the main point: we have a High Priest who has taken His seat at the right hand of the Majesty. The tabernacle had no chair because the priests were never finished. Christ is seated because His work is finished.

He ministers in the true tabernacle the Lord pitched, not the earthly copy and shadow. His more excellent ministry opens the road ahead: a better covenant enacted on better promises.

Wednesday Depth-Dive

Go deeper into the heavenly sanctuary, the pattern shown to Moses in Exodus 25:40, and the meaning of a more excellent ministry. Keep the old sanctuary both God-given and glorious while showing that it was still the copy, not the original.

Sunday Teaching

If the first covenant had been faultless, no second would have been sought. The fault was not in the law but in us, and God answers by writing His laws on the mind and heart and remembering sins no more.

The old is declared obsolete and aging toward its vanishing. The better covenant reaches inward where an external command could not complete the work.

Read Jeremiah 31:31-34 in full and study what "obsolete" does and does not mean. Follow the promise from an external inscription to an interior work of God.

Hebrews 8:7-13

Sunday Teaching

The first covenant had a beautiful sanctuary, but its architecture preached distance. Behind the second veil stood the ark and mercy seat, yet only the high priest entered, only once a year, and only with blood.

The Holy Spirit preached through the design that the way into the Holy Place was not yet open while the first tabernacle stood. The system could regulate access but could not perfect the conscience.

Wednesday Depth-Dive

Walk through the furniture and its meaning in Exodus 25-30, then study the Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16 and the phrase "imposed until a time of reformation." Let the room itself teach the distance.

Hebrews 9:1-10

Sunday Teaching

Christ entered not with the blood of goats and calves but through His own blood, and not into a copy but into the greater and more perfect tabernacle.

The argument is "how much more": if animal blood could sanctify the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ cleanse the conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Study the red heifer in Numbers 19, the words "through the eternal Spirit," and the difference between cleansing the flesh and cleansing the conscience.

Hebrews 9:11-14

Sunday Teaching

Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, and a covenant, like a last will, takes force by death. Moses ratified the first covenant with blood sprinkled on the book and the people.

Apart from the shedding of blood there is no remission. This is the Table's own text for Communion Sunday.

Return to Exodus 24 and the ratifying blood. Study the covenant and testament wordplay and the Lord's Table as the new-covenant meal.

Sunday Teaching

Christ did not enter holy places made with hands but heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. He was offered once at the end of the ages to put away sin.

He will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who eagerly wait for Him. This plants the seed that will reach its full weight in Advent.

Study the heavenly things cleansed, the phrase "once at the end of the ages," and the seed of the second appearing.

Hebrews 9:23-28

Sunday Teaching

The law was a shadow and could never perfect the worshiper. When Christ comes into the world He says, "A body You prepared for Me; behold, I have come to do Your will."

By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of His body once for all. The full weight of Hebrews 10:5-7 remains reserved for Advent.

Read Psalm 40:6-8 in its Greek form and study shadow versus the very image, with the will of God as the engine of the offering.

Sunday Teaching

Every priest stood daily, offering sacrifices that could never take sins away. Christ offered one sacrifice forever and sat down.

By one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Where there is remission, there is no longer any offering for sin. The seat is the sermon.

Set the seated Priest against the standing priests. Follow Psalm 110:1 and the footstool, then return to the new covenant as the proof of finished work.

Hebrews 10:11-18

Now comes the great "therefore." We have boldness to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way He opened through the veil, that is, His flesh.

The veil tore at the cross, at His death, because the veil is His flesh given for us. The access promised through the letter is now open.

Study the veil as His flesh, Matthew 27:50-51, and the access opened at the cross. Correct the misreading that the veil tore at His glory rather than at His death.

The first of three exhortations is the title verse of the series: let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, hearts sprinkled clean and bodies washed.

Everything the section has built exists to make this invitation possible. This is the centerpiece Sunday where the whole letter turns on the summons to come.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works.

Drawing near is personal; holding fast and considering one another is together. The assembling matters all the more as the Day approaches.

Study the faithfulness of the Promiser, the assembling as a means of grace, and the meaning of "the Day approaching."

The warning confronts willful sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth: trampling the Son of God and profaning the blood of the covenant.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. The drift warning must be preached with both severity and hope.

Study willful sin and the apostasy warnings of Hebrews, treading underfoot the Son, and the living God who judges His people.

Sunday Teaching

Remember the former days after you were enlightened, when you endured a hard struggle and accepted the plundering of your property joyfully because you knew you had a better and enduring possession.

On All Saints, this is the memory of the faithful who held, readying the room for the cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 11.

Study the endurance of the early believers, the better and enduring possession, and the saints who went before.

Do not throw away your boldness, which has a great reward. You have need of endurance so that, having done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.

The same boldness that brings us near is the boldness pressure tempts us to discard. Endurance is how the promise is received, not earned.

Study boldness as parresia, endurance as hupomone, and the relationship between doing the will of God and receiving the promise.

Hebrews 10:35-36

Sunday Teaching

In a very little while He who comes will come and will not delay. The righteous one will live by faith, and we are not of those who shrink back to destruction.

This closes the exposition and names the next movements at once: the One who comes in Advent and the life of faith in Hebrews 11.

Read Habakkuk 2:3-4 and study shrinking back versus faith, then follow the transition into Advent and Hebrews 11.

Sunday Teaching

Return deliberately to the seated Priest: having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, He sat down at the right hand of God, waiting until His enemies are made His footstool.

On Christ the King, the enthroned and waiting Priest-King is the capstone. His waiting becomes the doorway into Advent.

Return to Psalm 110:1 and study the reign, the already and the not yet, the King who waits, and the people who learn to wait with Him.
